Reasons to Love Italy
In a recent column in Corriere della Sera, the noted journalist and author Beppe Severgnini acknowledged that “alcuni aspetti dell’Italia ci addolorano” (certain aspects of Italy trouble us) or “ci imbarazzano” (embarrass us). "Altre cose, per fortuna, ci rendono orgogliosi." (Other things, fortunately, make us proud.)
While Beppe listed cento motivi per amare l'Italia (100 reasons to love Italy) and to be felice essere italiani (happy to be Italians), I have selected 20 to translate and share:
1. Perché siamo intelligenti, quando non diventiamo astuti. Because we are intelligent, when we do not become too smart for our own good.
2. Perché siamo geniali. Nessuno è altrettanto bravo a trasformare una crisi in una festa. Because we are genial. No one is as skillful at transforming a crisis into a party.
3. Perché siamo gentili e capaci di bei gesti (poi abbiamo difficoltà a trasformarli in buoni comportamento. Because we are kind and capable of lovely gestures (then we have difficulty transforming them into good conduct).
4. Perché abbiamo gusto. Sappiamo istintivamente cos’è bello. Because we have taste. We instinctively recognize what is beautiful.
5. Perché siamo interessanti. Turisti, uomini d’affari, Angela Merkel: con noi non ci si annoia. Because we are interesting. Tourists, businessmen, Angela Merkel: We never bore them.
6. Perché nel mondo ti guardano. In Italia ti vedono. Because in the world they look at you. In Italy they see you.
7. Perché le città sono attraversate dalla storia e dalla gente. Because the cities are marked by history and by people.
8. Perché abbiamo la testa in Europa, la pancia al vento e i piedi a mollo nel mare. Because we have our head in Europe, our belly exposed to the wind and our feet dangling in the sea.
9. Perché d’estate fa più caldo e d’inverno fa più freddo. Così possiamo rinfrescarci, riscaldarci e lamentarci. Because the summer is hotter and the winter is colder. And so we can cool off, warm up and complain.
10. Perché abbiamo i tigli nei giardini, gli abeti sui monti e i papaveri nei campi. Because we have lime trees in the gardens, firs in the mountains and poppies in the fields.
11. Perché gli italiani hanno saputo dipingere, scolpire, raccontare, cantare, recitare, arredare e vestire la vita. Because Italians have painted, sculpted, narrated, sung, acted, decorated and dressed life.
12. Perché a tavola mettiamo pane, amore e fantasia. Because we put on the table bread, love and imagination.
13. Perché abbiamo insegnato a mangiare al mondo. Be’, forse non a tutti: ma ai francesi, agli inglesi e agli americani, certamente sì. Because we have taught the world to eat. Well, perhaps not everyone, but certainly the French, English and Americans.
14. Perché abbiamo cappuccinizzato il pianeta, e in Italia un caffè non si nega a nessuno. Because we have "cappuccini-ated" the planet, and in Italy no one is refused a coffee.
15. Perché abbiamo inventato la pizza, la Vespa, la Fiat 500, l’Olivetti Lettera 22 e la giacca da donna. Quando teniamo le cose semplici, non ci batte nessuno. Because we invented pizza, the Vespa, the Fiat 500, the Olivetti Letter 22 and the woman’s jacket. When we stick to simple things, no one can beat us.
16. Perché molti ci criticano, ma tutti ci copiano. Because many criticize us but everyone copies us.
17. Perché siamo troppo indulgenti con imbroglioni e farabutti, ma li riconosciamo subito. Because we are too indulgent with crooks and scoundrels, but we spot them right away.
18. Perché c’è sempre qualcuno che prova a incoraggiare qualcun altro. Because there is always someone who tries to keep another's spirits up.
19. Perché in ogni laboratorio del mondo ci sono un computer, una pianta verde e un italiano (prima o poi restituitecelo, però). Because every laboratory in the world has a computer, a green plant and an Italian (but sooner or later return him to us!).
20. Perché le piazze sono salotti e sale d’attesa, mercati e assemblee, passerelle e palestre. Because the piazzas are living rooms and waiting rooms, markets and assemblies, catwalks and gyms.
